Photographer Ernie Hunter has just published a new set of Great Spangled Fritillary photos. The Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) is a member of the largest butterfly family with over 6000 species in twelve families. It is common in much of North America and is the most common Fritillary. It lays eggs in late summer and the young caterpillars over winter on or near violet plants, without eating, until spring, with many dieing. However, the female lays nearly 2000 eggs to account for this loss. The caterpillar eats various violet species (viola) including Johnny Jump Ups.
